Proxy Interviews and Interview Impersonation: How They Work and How to Detect Them

    8 minute read - Updated: November 2026

A proxy interview is one where someone other than the candidate answers the questions. In the simplest version the proxy sits off camera and whispers or types answers. In the most effective version the proxy controls the candidate's computer through a remote-desktop session and does the coding exercise while the candidate nods along. Either way the person who gets the job is not the person who passed the interview, and the first the employer learns of it is a new hire who cannot do the work, or a contractor whose work is being done by someone else at a lower rate.

Four ways a proxy gets into the interview

    1. The earpiece or second phone

Answers are fed by voice, from someone off camera or on a call the interviewer cannot hear.

    2. The second screen

Answers are typed into a chat the camera cannot see, often with an AI assistant drafting them.

    3. The remote-desktop takeover

The proxy drives the machine during live coding or a case exercise, which leaves no visible tell on the video.

    4. The full stand-in

The proxy appears on camera and the candidate never does, which overlaps with deepfake and identity fraud.

    Why interviewers rarely catch it

A good proxy is better at interviews than the candidate. The delay before answers is the only consistent tell, and it is easy to explain away. Remote-desktop sessions are invisible to the video platform. And interviewers are trained to assess answers, not to notice that the mouse is moving without the candidate's hand.

Signs worth noting on the call

    • Eyes that track text while the candidate "thinks".
    • Answers that arrive in complete, polished paragraphs.
    • A mismatch between the quality of live answers and of follow-ups.
    • Typing audible when the candidate is not typing.
    • In coding exercises, the cursor moving while both of the candidate's hands are visible.

Detecting the second operator from the device

ScreenComply records what is running on the candidate's device during the session, with consent:

    • A remote-desktop or screen-sharing session active while the interview runs.
    • Keyboard and mouse events arriving from a second input source.
    • AI assistants, chat windows and overlays open outside the interview.
    • A virtual camera where the stand-in version is used.

Each flag is timestamped and attached to the evidence. The interviewer finishes the interview as normal; the review happens afterwards.

Proxy interviews in staffing and contingent programs

In supplier-sourced hiring the proxy problem compounds, because the firm that interviewed never meets the worker and the client never met either. Identity continuity across the interview, onboarding and day one is the control.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is a proxy interview illegal?

It is fraud against the employer and often breaches the candidate's agreement. It becomes a criminal matter where identity documents are falsified or access is used for theft. Check your jurisdiction.

Can we just ask harder follow-up questions?

It helps against the earpiece version and does nothing against a remote-desktop takeover during a technical exercise.

Does detection require recording the candidate's screen?

No. The device signals (remote access, second input, running processes) are captured without screen recording, and screen recording is a separate option the employer turns on or off.

Will this flag candidates who use an external keyboard or a docking station?

A second physical device attached to the candidate's own machine is not a second operator. The signal is a remote session or input arriving from another system, and a human reviews every flag.
